I - STEM
The Indian Science, Technology and Engineering Facilities Map (I-STEM) is a national online portal of the Government of India that enables researchers, innovators, and industry to discover and access high-end, publicly funded scientific equipment across the country. Supported by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser and launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, I- STEM serves as a centralized platform that connects users with advanced research facilities available in institutions nationwide.
Through I-STEM, users can identify equipment, locate facilities, check availability, and formally request access for research and innovation purposes. Importantly, I-STEM does not own, operate, or manage any equipment or laboratories; it only facilitates access by linking users with host institutions such as IITs, NITs, IISERs, universities, and national laboratories.
The initiative addresses the widespread issue of under-utilisation of costly research infrastructure by improving visibility and accessibility. It benefits users by reducing the need for heavy capital investment, saving time, and providing access to expert technical support. Simultaneously, it helps institutions enhance equipment utilisation, foster collaborations, and improve returns on public investment, thereby strengthening India’s overall research and innovation ecosystem.
