About the Centre
The Centre for Tribal Technology Development (CTTD) at SVNIT, Surat, was established in 2024 as a first-of-its-kind initiative in Gujarat and among NITs, dedicated to the research, preservation, and innovation of indigenous tribal knowledge systems and technologies. The Centre serves as a bridge between traditional wisdom and modern scientific advancements, ensuring the integration of sustainable technologies that align with the socio-economic and cultural fabric of tribal communities.
CTTD is built on the belief that tribal knowledge, refined over generations, holds immense potential for sustainable resource management, ecological conservation, and technological innovations. The Centre is committed to harnessing this wisdom and enhancing it with contemporary scientific approaches to develop practical solutions that address the challenges faced by tribal communities.
The Centre fosters interdisciplinary research and innovation by bringing together faculty members, researchers, and scholars from diverse fields, including engineering, environmental sciences, social sciences, and rural development. Starting in 2025, CTTD will offer a Ph.D. program focused on indigenous knowledge systems, sustainable livelihoods, resource management, and tribal technology development. This program aims to create a strong research base that contributes to policy-making, industry collaborations, and grassroots-level interventions.
Beyond research, CTTD is actively involved in skill development and capacity-building programs designed to empower tribal populations with technical expertise and entrepreneurship opportunities. By engaging directly with communities, the Centre ensures that technological solutions are tailored to their unique needs while preserving their cultural identity and environmental sustainability.
Collaboration is at the heart of CTTD’s mission. The Centre is trying to work closely with government agencies, industries, NGOs, and academic institutions to co-develop solutions that support inclusive and sustainable development. Through these partnerships, CTTD facilitates the transfer of knowledge, technological innovations, and policy recommendations to create long-lasting social and economic impact.
With a vision of fostering a self-reliant and empowered tribal India, the Centre for Tribal Technology Development remains committed to driving change through research, innovation, and community engagement—ensuring that traditional wisdom and modern science work hand in hand for a sustainable future.
