Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai
(1919–1971)

Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai (1919–1971) was a pioneering Indian scientist, industrialist, and visionary leader, widely regarded as the father of the Indian space program. His remarkable contributions laid the foundation for India’s advancements in space science and technology.

Born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Dr. Sarabhai displayed exceptional curiosity and brilliance from an early age. He pursued his higher education at the University of Cambridge, where he conducted research in cosmic rays. After returning to India, he established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, which became a premier institute for space science research. Dr. Sarabhai was the driving force behind the establishment of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Under his visionary leadership, India began its journey in space exploration with a clear focus on applying space technology for national development in areas such as communication, meteorology, and education.

Beyond space science, he played a vital role in shaping India’s academic and industrial landscape. He was instrumental in establishing prestigious institutions like the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and contributed significantly to the development of India’s atomic energy and scientific research ecosystem.

Dr. Sarabhai strongly believed that science and technology should be used to solve real-world problems and improve the quality of life for society. His vision continues to inspire generations of scientists, engineers, and students across the nation.

Key perspectives from his philosophy: On Technology for Society: “We do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations in the exploration of the Moon or the planets or manned space-flight. But we are convinced that if we are to play a meaningful role nationally, and in the community of nations, we must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society.” On Space Research: "Space research is a necessity, not a luxury.” On Leadership: "There is no leader and there is no lead. A leader has to be a cultivator rather than a manufacturer.".
