About VLSI Design Laboratory

The VLSI Design Lab in Electronics Engineering Department of SVNIT, Surat was established in year 2005 under the SMDP-II (Special Manpower Development Program Phase II) project. The achievements of this program is available at http://www.smdp2vlsi.gov.in/smdp2vlsi/index.jsp

VLSI Design Lab in Electronics Engineering Department contains the well-established research facilities in the field of VLSI design both in analog and digital domain. To support these tools, the hardware infrastructure is well established with more then 25 computers and 3 servers of higher end configuration and networking support. Well known EDA tools from reputed vendors such as Synopsys, Mentor Graphics, Cadence, Xilinx and Altium are available for front-end and back-end VLSI design flow as well as device simulation.

About SMDP-C2SD Project

Department of Electronics & Information Technology has recently initiated Special Manpower Development Programme for Chips to System Design (SMDP-C2SD) in Dec-2015 with the following objectives and SVNIT Surat is one of PIs (Participating Institute) under the IIT Bombay RC (Resource Center) . With a view to create a globally competitive electronics design and manufacturing industry to meet the country's needs and serve the international market, number of initiatives have been taken up by the department in the areas of VLSI Design, Intellectual property rights and human resource development. SMDP-C2SD would make an endeavor to address the implementation the HRD strategies of the department (i) support creation of capacities within academic institutions to enhance production of adequate number of PhDs and PGs for supporting the growth of chip design and embedded software and board/hardware design industry in the country and (ii) Extending the SMDP for VLSI chip design to include large number of colleges and students leveraging national knowledge network.

SMDP C2SD design aims at not only broadening the VLSI Design base in the country by covering more institutions and generating special manpower, but also taking up new % distinctive initiatives which will ensure moving up in the value chain in the system design space.

1) Bring in a culture of system on chip/System designing by developing working prototypes with societal applications using mostly in-house designed ASICs/ICs.

2) Capacity building in the area of VLSI/Microelectronics and chip to System Development i.e. to train Special manpower in the area of VLSI Design and Chips to Systems at BE/BTech, ME/MTech and PhD level.

3) Broaden the base of ASIC/IC designing in the country.

4) Broaden the R&D base of Microelectronics / Chip to system through 'Networked PhD' Program

5) Promote 'Knowledge Exchange Program'

6) Promote protection of 'Intellectual Property' generated under the program
