The Institute was initially established as Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology, Surat in 1961 & converted into the Sardar Vallabhbhai National College of Engineering & Technology (SVNIT) Surat & granted a status of an Institute of National importance by the parliament passing the NIT Act 2007. The Institute is under the fully financial & administrative control of the Ministry of Human Recourse Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The Institute is on the path of academic & administrative excellence & resurgence at National & International level after conversion, making significant headway in reforms in critical & important sector of the technical education, committed to act effectively to reach highest level of academic excellence & also strengthening research & basic sciences. Recently the Institute has celebrated its Golden Jubilee Year.
The Institute currently has ten academic departments, in addition to various well equipped laboratories, Central Library with state of art facilities, Student Activity Centre, Central Computer Centre, Seminar Halls with required infrastructure, Dispensary etc. Located near the administrative building, the Central Library boasts of a collection of over 150,000 books and documents, and subscriptions to more than 600 printed and online journals and conference proceedings. The Electronic Library section has a collection of databases, video lectures and other helpful resources such as the AICTE-INDEST consortium which allows access to online journals and other periodicals. The Central Computer Centre (CCC) serves as a central hub for interconnecting the campus wide LAN covering all the hostels and departments of the institute. The institute also has a SIT(Student Interactive Terminal) of IIT Bombay, at NPTEL & EDUSAT centre in Computer engg. dept. where courses of liT Bombay are available through live telecast. Also eight ISTE- STTPs on fundamental courses of engineering were organised.
Spreading over 1.1 square kilometers (265 acres), the campus has 5000 inhabitants including 210 faculty members and 3500 students. Named after famous personalities of India, SVNIT has eleven hostels with nine dedicated to boys and two to girls.
Faculty of repute, brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of SVNIT. The Institute is well-known for Research and Development, Continuing education and Training programmes for teachers and industrial personnel. The placement service of the institute is one of the best of its kind in the country. In 2011 , India Today ranked SVNIT, Surat as 18th best engineering college among top 25 engineering colleges in the country.
